An Introduction!

Hi! I’m Kara, but you can also call me Kara Rose, Nico Nico Rose, whatevs there floats your boat. I’m a musician and writer, a fan of idols and Love Live specifically and games and anime and girly kei fashion.

If you know me from writing, it’s likely because of Love Live! New Melody Project!!, my Love Live fan fic series. It’s an ongoing series of novel-length fics interspersed with small one-shots, following µ’s and Aqours as adults a decade later with new original younger characters. You can read it on AO3! I’m currently writing season two.

Music-wise, I’m the keyboard player and one of the songwriters of @crystalfurs, an indie pop music project.

I absolutely adore Love Live. I love it all, but I have my favs. I’m a huge, huge Nozomi fangirl (and NozoEli is my favorite ship), and unsurprisingly µ’s is where I got my start and where my deepest love still is, but I am also a fan of the other groups and shows!

I’m a fan of indie, or “chika,” idols in real life, too, and am learning a lot about the underground idol scene and idol culture.

I’m also into other anime besides Love Live - some of my favs are Revue Starlight, Bocchi the Rock, Sakura Trick, New Game!, Comic Girls, The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady, Assault Lily, Azumanga Daioh, Laid-Back Camp, Love Chunibyo & Other Delusions, Lucky Star, Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun, and Symphogear.

I mainly talk about Love Live, lesbian anime, and other random things here. Almost entirely SFW, and if I reblog anything NSFW I tag it and mark it w/ the community labels thingy.

I am personally a lesbian, 40, and trans. I use she/her.

As someone who started listening to music on vinyl back when 8-tracks were still a thing, who saw the switch from them to cassettes and then to CDs, I can promise that recording peaked with CDs. Suddenly shuffle was a thing. they were more portable than vinyl, they didn't get chewed up just because the player got dirty, they had almost no moving parts, they were easy to rip, easy to queue up a song, and you could both carry around your media and easily loan (or resell) it - it combined the best of purely digital music with the best of cassettes, and had better quality/less recording artifacts than any previous medium.

Physical media is also the point.

As someone who has mastered music (my own and others') for CD and for vinyl, CD is a very forgiving and gentle platform, with the ability to go hard and loud or quiet and soft with no audible loss in quality (badly mastered CDs exist, lord knows, but it isn't the platform's fault). Their design allows for incredible feats of sound design, bordering on holographic using phasing tricks that are much more available now than in CD's heyday. We could do some amazing things on modern CDs if we wanted to.

Vinyl is not forgiving, and has needs much more demanding than CD. Your low frequencies need to roll off or the needle will skip; your high frequencies can't be too bright or the sound distorts. Loud songs at the ends of sides sound harsh and compressed because you have less physical space than at the start of a side. You have to be very very careful with your sound staging, making sure to take care of any and all phasing; no special tricks for surround sound are allowed.

I love vinyl as an artifact of the creation of music, but if I had to choose a platform to represent my music accurately, it would be CD.
